Anyway down to business BMW one of my best mates sells BMW and his advice
was to opt for the 318ESd which still has the 2ltr engine but is detuned to
122BHP which is more than enough.

The car saving is approx 2.5K from the 320ESd. I then chose to upgrade the
alloys cost £283.00 sport steering wheel £100.00 Metalic Paint Cruise
control 130.00.

Obviously, too many options and I may as well go for the SE.

What not to say in an application

There are no "mistakes" only "valuable lessons"
Never say "never" but always mention your "achievement", is the advice
for job hunters trying to fill in application forms.
Admissions advisers and psychologists at the University of
Hertfordshire have drawn up a list of the 10 top words to make a good
impression in applications.

They have also listed the 10 worst words, including "hate" and "nothing".

This advice also tells applicants not to say "mistakes" but to mention
their "valuable lessons".

'Don't panic'

If applicants are worried about having too many valuable lessons, the
Hertfordshire academics also recommend avoiding other less than
positive words, such as "panic", "problems" and "awful".

APPLICATION FORM WORDS
10 Best: Achievement, active, developed, evidence, experience, impact,
individual, involved, planning, transferable skills
10 Worst: Always, awful, bad, fault, hate, mistake, never, nothing,
panic, problems

None of these words are good ways of selling your skills to employers,
suggest the academics.

If you want to push more positive buttons, there is a list of
feel-good words for applications, which will produce a more
appreciative reaction.

These good words include "experience", "involved", "planning" and "developed".

The advisers say companies or universities will see many similar
application letters - and that the choice of language generates a
positive or negative impression.

For instance, over-emphatic words such as "never" and "always" could
give a negative impression that "the applicant is making an
exaggeration which is seldom true".

"Every recruiter and admissions officer will have to assess hundreds
if not thousands of personal statements from hopeful applicants and
will make their decisions based on what they can see on paper.

"Choosing the right words is therefore vitally important if your
application is to stand out from the rest," says Karen Pine, a
psychologist at the University of Hertfordshire.

The blogosphere is varied and growing at a steady rate
The blogosphere is continuing to grow, with a weblog created every
second, according to blog trackers Technorati.
In its latest State of the Blogosphere report, it said the number of
blogs it was tracking now stood at more than 14.2m blogs, up from 7.8m
in March.

It suggests, on average, the number of blogs is doubling every five months.

Blogs, the homepages of the 21st Century, are free and easy to set up
and use. They are popular with people who want to share thoughts
online.

They allow for the instant publication of ideas and for interactive
conversations, through comments, with friends or strangers.

Global voices

Technorati is like a search engine that keeps track of what is
happening in the blogosphere, the name given to the universe of
weblogs.

It relies on people tagging - giving keywords to - their blogs or blog
posts so that its search engine can find them.

Free blogging services such as those provided by MSN Spaces, Blogger,
LiveJournal, AOL Journals, WordPress and Movable Type were also
growing quickly, said the report.

Blogs are easy to use and can be subscribed to
Thirteen percent of all blogs that Technorati tracks are updated
weekly or more, said the report, and 55% of all new bloggers are still
posting three months after they started.

It also pointed to the growth in moblogs, blogs to which people with
camera phones automatically send pictures and text.

Other services, such as the Google toolbar and the Flickr photo
sharing website, have implemented "blog this" buttons, which also make
it easier for people to post content they like on the web straight to
their blogs.

The voices in the blogosphere are also sounding less US-centric, with
blog growth spotted in Japan, Korea, China, UK, France, and Brazil.

Varied sphere

What is clear is that the blogosphere is highly varied, with blogs
coming in many shapes and forms, whether they be professional or for
personal use.

Blogs have been used as campaign sites, as personal diaries, as art
projects, online magazines and as places for community networking.

Much of their appeal has been boosted because readers can subscribe to
them, for free, to stay updated of any new posts automatically.

Blogs have played a part in highlighting issues that journalists have
not covered. They have also proved to be a valuable communication
channel for journalists in repressed countries who have no other
publishing means.

They have recently shown how they can also complement and enhance
mainstream press in coverage of events, such as the recent London
terror attacks.

The Technorati report did not, however, break down the blogosphere in
terms of gender use.

Over the weekend, the BlogHer conference took place in the US, which
saw a gathering of almost 300 bloggers talk over blogging issues which
are pertinent to women, and to men.

perhaps you leave it up to M&D to set the figures and times involved,

a] what's the usual period of time that you book, 3 night / 4 night?
b] what budget do you work to for hotels?

A1] 3 nights is the most probable length of time. About £60 to £70 per
night per room (not per person) is the figure to stick to. Location is
obviously a major factor so as many sites as possible can be accessed
on foot.

Q2] Timing of flight's, what's the usual rules re: that, avoid first
thing a.m [c 5.00am]

A2] They like to leave early to make the most of the day, 5am may be
too early a departure, about 8am would be better if this is available.
Check the easyjet site to check the schedules and see what flight
times they do to and from Paris so you are ready to strike. They have
also preferred in the past a late return (9pm onwards) so they can
make the most of the final day.

Q3] Are there any dates that need to be avoided in April [i'm thinking
12th - 27th, subject to not clashing with school hols].

A3] You will have to check google for the 2006 school holiday weeks to
ensure you avoid the school holidays - this is when the majority of
hotels and airlines bump up the price.

5-year blueprint to drive city revival Jul 1 2004

RADICAL plans for the future of Liverpool were unveiled in the city last night.

In a keynote speech, council leader Mike Storey (left) pledged a series of major changes, including on-the-spot fines for dropping litter and 500 new street wardens to tackle anti-social behaviour.

His announcement comes as the Duke of Westminster's Grosvenor company prepares to start its £800m redevelopment of the city centre next week.

Cllr Storey told a packed town hall the past 12 months had been a remarkable year for Liverpool. This, he added, followed a five-year period of unparalleled growth for the city.

But Cllr Storey said the next five years would, if anything, be "even more difficult".

During his speech, at the council's annual dinner following the city's mayor-making ceremony, Cllr Storey pledged to:

* create 10,000 new jobs aimed at the most deprived areas of Liverpool;

* urge Merseyside Police to introduce a dedicated local officer to every local area;

* increase the city's population to 500,000 again (currently around 438,000);

* end the city's North/South divide by tackling the problems of north Liverpool;

* introduce on-the-spot fines for dropping litter;

* recruit 500 new street wardens to tackle anti-social behaviour.

Labour leader Cllr Joe Anderson last night said the policies were "more of a wish list than a manifesto" and demanded to know how the policies would be paid for without council tax rises.

He added that, where Cllr Storey was concerned, it was a case of the "emperor having no clothes."

Google PageRank and How To Get It By Bob Wakfer

Google's PageRank (PR) is one of the most sought after, and yet misunderstood web page attributes. PageRank, named after one of the founders of the Google search engine, Larry Page, was the innovative foundation that the Google search engine was built on.

The theory was that a link from one web page to a web page of another site was in essence a vote for that page. The reasoning was that webmasters would only link to pages that they thought were interesting and of value to their viewers. Google used the number of inbound links (IBL) to a page to judge the importance and relevance of that page, and based on this calculation, and other factors, decided where to place that page on the search results page (SERP).

They devised a scale of measurement for PageRank from 1 to 10. Then for the information of webmasters and interested people they produced a toolbar that can be deployed in Internet Explorer that indicates the PageRank value of any page being viewed in the browser. These values have become known as PR0 to PR10.

Since PR values are a result of IBLs, Google decided to give them their own name and refers to inbound links as backlinks. As part of the toolbar there is a quick lookup of the number of backlinks that Google reports for the page that is currently being viewed in the browser. This search can also be done without the aid of the toolbar
by simply typing "link:http://www.yourURL.com" into the Google search box.

The one trick to this link search is that Google does not display all backlinks. At one time it was thought that they only listed pages with a value of PR4 or greater. Today however, you will find backlinks reported from pages of lower PR values. So, at best, Google's backlink search seems to present some sample of pages linking to the site. Suffice it to say that this search is not a reliable measure of all
IBLs to a page.

How is PageRank Calculated?

In simplest terms PR is calculated by the sharing of PR from all the IBL links to your page. This is not strictly accurate because Google also uses the internal links within a site in the calculation of PR. Each link to a page carries with it and passes PR value to the target page. The PR points or value passed depend on the PR value of the page they come from, and the total outbound links from the page. It is
generally agreed that a page will only pass about 85% of its value to the page it links to. So a PR5 page with a single outbound link will pass 85% of the value of a PR5 page to the page it links to.

But virtually no page has only a single link -- remember internal links are also used in the total outbound link count -- so the value passed to any page is 85% of the PR, divided by the total number of outbound links.

The question now becomes what is the PR point value of the different PR levels. Most observers believe that the relationship between PR levels is logarithmic rather than linear. In other words PR5 is not worth 25% more than a PR4, but may be worth 4 to 6 times more.

It is also understood that a PR value is not a single number, but is in fact a range of values. So not all PR6s are equal. As the chart below shows a PR6 may be just on the upper boundary of a PR5 or it may be just short of the entry point for a PR7.

The chart that follows shows the range for each PR value. It also shows how much PR value or PR points a page with 50 outbound links will pass depending on of its own PR rank. From this I have calculated the number of links required from each value of PageRank necessary for a page to attain a desired page rank.

The Assumptions And The Mathematics:

For those who are interested I have used logarithmic values of base 5.5. In other words the value range for a PR1 lies between 5.5 to the power of 1 and 5.5 to the power of 1.99, and PR2 lies between the value of 5.5 to the power of 2 and 5.5 to the power of 2.99 etc. The rest of the chart is fairly straight forward. It assumes that there are 50 links per page and that 85% of the PR value is passed to the
recipient page.

The number of links required to attain any ranking is based on the median value of the donor page and the entry threshold of the desired PR value. In other words to achieve a PR5 you need 5,033 points and the average points available from a PR6 page with 50 links is 1507.

The chart was calculated with an Excel spreadsheet and it can be downloaded if anyone wants to play with the calculations and assumptions. It might be interesting to work with a different base number for the logarithmic calculation. And it is also interesting to see the impact of more or less outbound links from a page.

Are These Findings Valid?

Nobody knows for sure how Google calculates PR. I have shown this chart to a number of knowledgeable people and they have all agreed that my calculations look reasonable. One SEO guru from a major firm said the results were very similar to independent research that his firm had conducted.

So take it or leave it. It is probably a fair reflection of how PR is passed and accumulated.

The lesson that can be drawn from this explanation and chart is that if you want to increase your PR you need a few links from pages with equivalent or higher PR, or a great many links from sites with lower PR.

Some tips for speeding up your pc...

Clean out files no longer required. Your system is full of unneeded
backup, log files and temporary files - why not clean them out to
create some disk space? The Disk Cleanup Wizard will do all this
and will empty the Recycle bin as well. Just select Start Menu,
Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup. Put a shortcut
to it on your desktop.

Get rid of screen savers and other effects - they are not necessary
and occupy resources. Right-click anywhere on the desktop and
choose Properties. Under the Appearance tab, turn off any items
checked such as Transitions Effects, Animated Icons etc

Do A Search For Old and Useless Files - Start/Find (or Search)/
then do a search for all these files, exactly as shown;

*.old, *.chk, *.spl, *.prv, *.000, *.bak, *.tmp

Defragment your hard disk. As you write to your hard disk, it
becomes more and more difficult to keep files stored together so
a file may be split or fragmented, over several parts of the disk.
This slows access to the files, causing the system to slow. Select
Start Menu, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

Get rid of screen savers - they are not necessary and occupy
resources.

These are a few very simple things you can do. Of course, there is
a lot more can be done, but this should benefit you with some kind
of performance boost...

Can you speak with Eliot and see how he is progressing with the letter he was going to send to the council.
